This map depicts the various maritime boundaries and zones in the Torres Strait. These include Australia`s jurisdictional maritime boundaries, as well as, the seabed and fisheries jurisdiction line established under the Treaty between Australia and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. This Treaty entered into force on 15 February 1985.
The map also depicts a protected zone established under the Treaty to acknowledge and protect the traditional way of life and livelihood of the traditional inhabitants including their traditional fishing and free movement, as well as, to protect and preserve the marine environment and indigenous fauna and flora.
The depiction of the Territorial Sea Baseline (TSB) and the outer limits of Australia`s maritime zones shown on the map are sourced from the Australian Marine Spatial Information System (AMSIS) maintained by Geoscience Australia. The TSB and zones are established under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973.
